Areas of low transmission present problems for malaria diagnostics. Few patients who receive a diagnosis are positive for the disease, and patients frequently have low parasite densities which may lead to false negative malaria results. These are challenges to case finding, cost and elimination.

ACT Consortium researchers presented findings and experience of using malaria rapid diagnostic tests (RDTs) in different low-transmission settings in Africa and Asia.

Presentations and Speakers

  • Results from the Afghan studies in areas of co-endemic vivax and falciparum malaria at very low transmission intensity (Dr Toby Leslie, London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, UK)
  • Results from Zanzibar studies on use of RDT during transition from high to low malaria endemicity, the reasons for adherence to RDT results and the way forward (Dr Delér Shakely, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden)
  • Dr Anders Björkman, Karolinska Institutet, Sweden
  • Mr Mwinyi I. Msellem, Zanzibar Malaria Control Program, Zanzibar/Tanzania
