Malaria control to elimination - emerging consensus on 'accelerating to zero'

21 October 2013

The Director of the ACT Consortium talks about the concept of malaria eradication on The Lancet Global Health Blog after attending the 6th Pan-African Multilateral Initiative on Malaria conference (MIM) in Durban, South Africa.

Prof David Schellenberg compared the goals set for this year's MIM conference to the ambitions discussed when its delegates first gathered over a decade ago. Despite major progress, thousands of people still die every year from this preventable and treatable disease.

The funding that malaria has received from major donors - such as the Global Fund and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, who funds the work of the ACT Consortium - have played a crucial role in this progress, according to Schellenberg.

The Professor of Malaria & International Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine described how malaria experts from around the world shared knowledge in different research areas, such as drug resistance and the latest results from the ongoing phase III trial of the RTS,S malaria vaccine.
